What is Ideal Weight?

What is the purpose of calculating Ideal Weight?

Ideal weight calculation serves as a reference to assess whether a person’s weight falls within a healthy range, helping prevent conditions associated with excess or insufficient weight, such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.


How does the calculation work?

The calculation is based on the person’s height, converted into extra inches above 152.4 cm (equivalent to 5 feet). From this measurement, a specific multiplier is applied according to the chosen formula and the person’s sex.

Additionally, a healthy weight range based on Body Mass Index (BMI) is also considered, which defines an ideal weight range for each height.

1. Devine Formula

Developed in 1974, the Devine formula is widely used in clinical practice to determine medication dosages based on ideal body weight.

4. Miller Formula

Published in 1983, the Miller formula is more conservative, proposing a smaller weight gain per additional inch.

5. Healthy weight based on BMI

How to take the measurements

  • Height: in centimeters, measured barefoot.
  • Waist: the narrowest circumference between the thorax and navel.
  • Neck: just below the Adam’s apple.
  • Hip: the largest circumference around the buttocks (women only).
